A 27 year old man has been burnt to death by residents of Ayiem in the Amenfi Central District of the Western Region for allegedly killing a pregnant woman.
Kasapafmonline reports that the pregnant woman died last week and the young man, identified as Sarfo, was suspected of carrying out the murder and subsequently went into hiding.
He was apprehended by the youth in the area on Wednesday, and despite pleas to hand him off to police, they went ahead to burn him to death.
There is a sickness in this country, where people feel like they know everything, and therefore can never be wrong in the choices.
When it comes to killing someone unlawfully, there is no margin for error, because at that point that person is just a suspect, and has not been convicted of anything. Taking the law into one’s hands is too huge and unnecessary a gamble to take.
Sadly this kind of mob justice is all too common in this country, and is not only reserved to suspected criminals but sometimes oppressed minorities like the LGBT who get the crap beaten out of them for the crime of being different. And because perpetrators are rarely prosecuted, there is no sufficient deterrent.
Of course crime is a problem, and sometimes rage takes over thinking faculties, but for the safety of all of us even criminals must be treated via the rule of law, otherwise innocent people who find themselves at the wrong place at the wrong time would be lynched, as can happen sometimes.
But in their ignorance, the ignorant can be as obstinate as anybody else on this planet.
