The Supreme Court of Ghana has ordered the Electoral Commission to purge from the electoral rolls the names of those the court deem ineligible due to a challenge raised in a case brought before them.
The court ruled that all those who registered using National Health Insurance Scheme ID’s should be purged from the roll, as well as those who have passed away. The court said the register cannot be described as credible until these issues have been fixed.
The PNC’s Abu Ramadan and the NPP’s Kwame Baffoe took the case before the court after the EC refused several pleas from opposition parties to clean up the register.
The court also added that after the purge, those who have fallen victim should be given a window of time for them to properly re-register.
Several opposition parties, led by the New Patriotic Party, had called on the Commission to compile a new voters register, something that was outright dismissed. The worry was that there are minors on the roll, due to the use of NHIS cards to register.
