These so-called honour killings remain a big part of some cultures worldwide- where a person is killed for allegedly ‘dishonouring’ their family. Women have gotten killed for getting raped, and now apparently, for helping others elope.
The cold hand of religion, warping the moral compass of its adherents with its apriori proclamations, lurks behind every single instance of this madness.
A teenage girl in Pakistan has been burnt to death in a so-called ‘honour killing’ by elders in her village for helping a friend elope and get married.
The girl, a 16 year old described only as Ambreen, helped her friend, who might otherwise have been confined to an arranged marriage or  perhaps something even more sinister- and that little act of defiance apparently earned her the death sentence.
She was poisoned, tied to a van, and then burnt to death by a village council of about fifteen people- who acted with the express permission of her mother.
The council, known as ‘the jirga’ “took her to an abandoned place outside the village and made her unconscious by injecting her with some drugs”, district police chief Saeed Wazir said, according to The Independent.
“Then they seated the girl in a van in which the couple had escaped. They tied her hands to the seats and then poured petrol on her and the vehicle.” Wazir continued.
“I hadn’t seen such a barbaric attack in my whole life.”
Perhaps as a means of twisted irony, she was burnt in the same bus she used to help her friend escape. The attack was presumably so brutal that no other girl would ever think of leaving the village ever again.
The council, including her mother, were later arrested by police and arraigned before court.
We are constantly reminded that Islam is ‘the religion of peace’, but day by day we hear of incidents exposing it as anything but. Of course, the peaceful elements exist, but when you pride yourself as ‘the religion of peace’, there is nothing remarkable about being peaceful.
The truth is no religion is of peace, what with their histories of bloody conquests and holy books filled with petulant warrior gods. Allah repeatedly asks for the killing of the infidel, and gives edicts that lead to misogyny, oppression of minorities and other primitive sets of behaviours which repulses every 21st century mind not brainwashed into believing stone age religions are the best way to live.
Honour killings transcend religion and culture, but it’s propped up by both in several countries around the world, including Pakistan- and so long as people derive this sort of ‘supernatural authority’ from religion, cultures such as this one killing a poor girl for the act of helping a friend escape a life of forced marriage would remain.
