3. KOFORIDUA
The capital town of the Eastern Region with an estimated population of 87,315 per the 2000 census. Presently the city has a high population of Ashantis and a very healthy mixture of other Ghanaian tribes.
A predominant natural feature is the ‘obuor Tabiri’ mountain which is also considered sacred. Every year the ‘Akwentukese’ festival is celebrated to mark the movement of the ancestors from Ashanti land to their present location. Koforidua owes it’s name to a young man named Kofi Ofori who had built a hut under a huge mahogany tree.
The tree provided shelter for weary farmers, overtime it became common for people to say they were going to get rest under kofi Ofori’s tree hence Koforidua.
In twi ‘dua’ means tree, ‘dua’ could also mean stick. In akan parlance ‘s) wu dua mu’ translates to hold your stick, it is an euphemistic expression that means hold your manhood.
