Director Frank Garbin has brushed off allegations of racism levied at his latest production, ‘Black Monkey’.
The movie’s title has come under severe criticism for supposedly perpetuating racial stereotypes against Africans.
But Garbin has said the movie is deeper than simply its title, and that the use of the term ‘Black Monkey’ is a way to strip it of its negative connotations.
“Honestly I see nothing wrong with the title. But what I will say is this, after watching the whole movie and understanding the message in it, they will know ‘Black Monkey’ is the perfect caption for this production,” Frank stated.
“Sometimes it’s so pathetic that in this 21st century, when someone is referring to we blacks, it is Black Monkey that they use in reference to us. These and many other mental slavery actions in our generation that, it is only the ‘Black Monkey’ movie which will take off that perception away from our minds.
“You can’t judge a book by its cover, you read the book and understand its content.” He added.
‘Black Monkey’ stars Lil Win, Van Vicker, Bernard Nyarko and others, and tells the story of how the white man entered our lands and looted our resources, whilst hiding behind the guise of religion.
‘Black Monkey’ premieres on July 9, 2016.
