The UEFA European Championships commenced Friday night at the Stade de France in Paris, as hosts France kicked off the tournament against Romania.
After a flamboyant opening ceremony in front of a pumped up capacity filled stadium, the action commenced, both sides setting a frenetic pace as they tried to get the killer blow early on.
Yet neither managed to, with Romania’s famed defence holding strong against France’s multi talented squad. Early favourites, Les Bleus still failed to convince of the tag, with several high profile stars having uncharacteristic off-nights.
Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud opened the scoring in the 57th minute, after beating Romanian goalie Ciprian Tatarusanu to be first in connecting to a lashed in Dimitry Payet cross. The goal put the hosts in charge, but not for long.
Nicolae Stanciu was tripped in the box by Patrice Evra barely eights minutes later, and Bogdan Stancu made no mistake from the spot, burying the penalty to draw Romania level.
The Central European side hanged on for dear life, as France lobbed wave after wave of attack against them. They seemed to be holding on well enough, until Payet struck two minutes from time.
The West Ham winger took a ball on the edge of the box, turned it onto his weaker left foot, and unleashed a stunner into the top left corner- sending the crowd into ecstasy and Payet into tears.
The tournament continues today (Saturday), with England’s fixture against Russia the highlight of the day’s action. Kick off is at 19:00 GMT.
