IEA Rubbishes Claims They Organise Presidential Debates For Monetary Gains

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), the think tank that organises Presidential debates, have come out to rubbish claims that they like putting on the event due to the cash they make from it.
The Institute has had to fight an entrenched PR battle with the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) for the rights to host this year’s debate, and critics have noted that they fought so hard to keep the rights because they benefit from it.
But in a scathing reply, the Institute’s Executive Director, Mrs Jean Mensa, says the criticism is complete nonsense.
“It’s complete nonsense. It has nothing whatsoever to do with financing.” She said on Class FM Wednesday.
“There are many activities of the IEA; this is once in every four years and I mean that’s what one should ask. I mean it’s complete nonsense.
“How about the other platforms who also want to organise presidential debates?” she enquired?
“Where are they going to get the resources from? This whole country is financed by foreign partners. Where are they going to get the resources from?
“The IEA has lots of activities going on: extensive research and advocacy and several initiatives going on. A programme that is once every four years has no bearing on the finances of the institution and, so, those arguments are completely lame.” She added.
This year’s debates would be missing a huge component anyway, with the announcement of the ruling NDC that they’re withdrawing from it.
