African music legend Professor J.H Nketia, whose pivotal publication ‘The Music of Africa’ is the gold standard in studying the music of the continent, turns 95 year old today.
The maternal grandfather of rapper M.anifest, Professor Nketia is the author of numerous publications, composer of innumerable songs, and one of the foremost authorities on African music.
Born on June 22 1921, Professor Nketia remains strong at 95, as M.anifest noted in his birthday wish to the old man.
“My grandpa, Prof J.H Nketia, is 95 today! ??. Walks by himself. Still writing books. Travels. Delivers lectures. Gives me feedback on music. OG of all OG’s. Greatness.” He wrote on Facebook.
M.anifest grew up around the Professor, although he ironically learnt very little about music from him. Nketia is the father of M.anifest’s mother, Nana Nketia – a lawyer and pastor.
