The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and President’s Mahama’s main rival for President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, has broken his silence on the current swirling allegations against the President over a ‘gift’ of a Ford vehicle he received from a Burkinabe businessman.
Nana Addo was speaking at a youth forum in Accra Friday when he addressed the issue directly for the first time.
According to him, the saga is symptomatic of the corruption in the current government, adding that the President’s conduct raises serious questions about conflicts of interest and other issues.
“I’m sure you have been here following the remarkable spectacle of our President, who has been given a $100,000 gift by a contractor and the issues that it has raised about conflict of interest, about personal integrity, code of conduct of public officers.” He addressed the forum attendees.
“And this is within a context where there have been persistent and many instances of proven allegations of widespread corruption in President Mahama’s government,” he added.
The President, for his part, thinks the entire saga is laughable. According to him, one cannot bribe him with a car he does not fancy.
“I don’t use Fords. I don’t like American cars. I use Japanese cars. Toyota is my car,” he said Thursday.
The duo face off on November 7 for the presidential election.
