This man revels in going on air to say as many outrageous things as he can in the guise of ‘counselling’, but it turns out the man is a gigantic fraud who’s not certified to ‘counsel’ anybody.
One of the problems with this country is people building up ‘celebrity’ status and thus gain a pass to do all sorts of things they’re ill qualified for, but by constantly being portrayed in the media, they get a sense of legitimacy to what they do. Maurice Ampaw is a prime example of this, as is George Lutterodt.
The Ghana Psychological Council, the body in charge of licensing counsellors in the country, have written a public letter denouncing the actions of Lutterodt, saying that he is not licensed and thus not qualified to counsel even the mad people roaming the streets. Essentially he is a fraud who has built a career doing something he was never qualified to do.
The letter notes that he is not a member of the body, which is the only one mandated by law to license counsellors in the country. Anyone who provides counselling services without being mandated runs is in breach of ACT 857 of 2013, a crime for which one can be convicted.
Speaking on Kasapa Fm, the acting registrar of the council, Dr Dinah Baah-Odoom, stated unequivocally that what Lutterodt was doing was in clear breach of the law.
“Now before anyone can make any pronouncement that person must be a registered member of the Ghana Psychological Association.” She said.
“I assure you that he’s not a registered member of the association and per the law ACT 857 he’s not supposed to give counseling service.”
She added that not being a professional, counsellor Lutterodt could have applied to be licensed as a ‘lay’ counsellor, but he has not done that either.
“Counseling is a psychological service although many Ghanaians don’t know, there are certificate and diploma courses for lay counselors, and Counselor Lutterodt is not a professional counselor so we could have registered him as a lay counselor.
“The Psychological Council is not the least happy with the fact that Counselor holds himself as a counselor and also finds his position on certain issues condemnable.  If you call yourself a counselor… we are bounded by code of ethics, so there are things we don’t say and there are others that are outrageous.
“To the public you may think its okay but it’s unacceptable. He can go on radio and give advice as anybody will do, no one can stop him from doing that but he can’t call himself a counselor because he’s not one.” She emphatically closed.
