Cersei Lannister may be a mass murdering b*tch onscreen, but Lena Headey is actually a pretty decent human being. As is Maisey Williams; even though her character is a sociopathic assassin.
Three cast members of the hit HBO show Game of Thrones – which is just ending another season after delivering the most explosive of series finales – visited a Syrian refugee camp earlier this week.
The visit, in partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC), was conducted by three stars of the HBO show – Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) and Lian Cunningham (Davos Seaworth)
The trio visited camps operated by the IRC in northern Greece. The Syrian refugee crisis is coming to a head as thousands flee the war-torn nation for Europe, yet find many countries unwilling to take them in. In such dire straits, refugee camps like the ones operated by the IRC become their only choice, and that’s for the lucky ones.
“These smart, hardworking people want to go home. They want to return to their communities and to their neighborhoods. They want their children to continue their education. They want to continue their university and they are stuck. They’re stuck. And they’re unbelievably sad. Understandably. We can do better for them. We must do better for them.” Lena Headey told the press.
“This is not an earthquake, this is not a tidal wave,” Cunningham added. “This is a man-made crisis. 57,000 stranded in Greece. Refugee camps in Europe? Is this truly the standard EU leaders want to set as the way to respond to the global refugee crisis?”
Maisie Williams says, “For me it is about the children…children with so much potential, so many hopes and dreams. Where is the humanity that makes it acceptable for them to languish in refugee camps – in Europe?”
