atta-ayi_opt
As part of the activities to mark Ghana’s Republic Day which falls on the July 1, the president grants amnesty to some selected prisoners.
Last year the president pardoned 900 prisoners thus they were set free. It looks like the number dropped by a negligible margin this year.
A statement from the Flagstaff said the president in remembrance of the 56th Republic Day has granted 896 prisoners amnesty.
The freed prisoners are in the following categories:
1.First Offenders – 813
2.Seriously ill – 16
3.Aged 70 years and above – 63
4.Special Case (Double Amputee) – 1
5.Death row commuted to Life Imprisonment – 3
Article 72(1) of the 1992 constitution says that the President may in consultation with the Council of State grant a person convicted of an offence a pardon either free or subject to lawful conditions.
