Creator Brian Michael Bendis revealed this in an interview with TIME, saying he decided on the concept of a young girl taking over the position after hearing the story of a young girl who overcame adversity to become a role model.
Riri is a brilliant 15 year old enrolled at MIT, who created one of Stark’s suits by her own in her dorm room. When she came to his attention, he decided to pass the mantle on to her.
