Think We Have It Bad? You Wouldn't Believe How Much Cash Nigerians Spend On Power Every Year Due To Dumsor

Dumsor
Dumsor is Universal

There is no doubt that Ghana has gone through our own debilitating power crisis. There were low points during that crisis that the suffering unleashed on us I wouldn’t wish on even my worst enemy.
But Nigeria apparently has had it far worse for far longer.
Comedian Basketmouth Sunday decided to take a step back from his usual funny antics and hit his fans with the terrible conditions of Nigerian power. Rattling off statistics of their power problems from 2013, it put into sharp relief the kind of incompetent man management us Africans always have to put up with from our leaders, as by then it was a problem that had been raging for a while.
“Nigerians spent over N3.5 trillion (over $12bn) annually on power generators in 2013.” he wrote.
“Banks, factories and traders spent over N2trillion ($8.9bn) to power their generators annually. In banking, each branch spends over N4million ($14,000) on diesel monthly and the average family spent over N60,000 ($200) in a month to power their generators. I don’t want to talk about hotels, hospitals etc.
“This was in 2013….we are in 2016. Guess what? PHCN still sends bills even without power.” he concluded.
Those are staggering figures, from three years ago! It is amazing the kind of losses an economy has to suffer when the most crucial element of modern industralisation, power, is taken away. You have to imagine what would happen if all this capital was actually being put to some other use.
It would be interesting to see a comparable chart for Ghana, for the losses we made during those few years of Mahama induced dumsor.
