Turkish Army Attempts Failed Coup

The Turkish Army staged an overnight coup attempt which seems to have been foiled by forces loyal to the President, Reccip Tayyip Erdogan.
A group of soldiers announced the coup late Friday on national tv, claiming they had taken over the nation and declared martial law.
The group said the current government had destroyed Turkey’s democracy and rule of law, and thus had to be toppled.
“Turkish Armed Forces have completely taken over the administration of the country to reinstate constitutional order, human rights and freedom,” they said in a statement at the time.
The whereabouts of Mr Erdogan at this point was unkown, but he addressed the nation via FaceTime, condemning the coup.
Yet as the night wore on, forces loyal to the President began to seize control of the situation, culminating in his triumphant appearance in Istanbul early Saturday.
The clashes has left sixty people, mostly civilians, dead, whilst 754 soldiers have been arrested. The military chief of staff, Gen Hulusi Akar, who reportedly led the coup, is nowhere to be found.
Erdogan made a triumphant address surrounded by cheering supporters early Saturday, saying enemies of democracy has attempted to subvert the rule of law.
Erdogan, one of the most despotic ‘democratically’ elected leaders in the world, routinely cracks down on the press and citizens who criticise his government, even for the most innocuous of criticisms.
