The proposal to move election day in Ghana from December to November 7 has failed to pass in Ghana parliament after a vote was held Thursday.
The Constitutional Amendment Bill 2016 was voted for by 125 MP’s, with 95 voting against it. It therefore failed to garner the necessary two-thirds majority, or 184 votes, needed to be passed into law.
As with everything in this country, it became a partisan issue on the floor, with the NDC being for and the NPP against it, irrespective of whatever merits or demerits the bill held.
Supporters said the change would allow for more time for the transition from one government to the other to occur. But its critics, the NPP in this case, expressed worry that an already under fire Commission would struggle to implement the needed changes to run a smooth election on November 7.
So we are voting on December 7, afterall.
