With the election campaign heating up, the tribal and religious comments seeking to divide people along one party line or another has already started coming, with perpetrators in both parties.
Tribalism is something that would perhaps never be divorced from our politics, but NPP flagbearer Nana Akuffo Addo is calling for the populace to discount politicians who attempt to fan up those sentiments.
In a post on Facebook Wednesday, Nana Addo called on Ghanaians to cherish our tribal and religious diversity, and pay no heed to politicians who attempt to stoke such flames.
“The various tribes and religions in Ghana all live in harmony. However, when the time for election is due, there are some who will come with their messages of division, trying to set tribes and religions against each other. Please, do not pay heed to such people. We are all Ghanaians and let us continue to live in unity and harmony.” he wrote.
As with most Ghanaian politicians, this is a post heavy on rhetoric and light on substance. The NPP has been as guilty of tribal politics as anything you could ever lob at the NDC, so perhaps we should see a lot more action and a lot less Facebook updates from our politicians. That would let us know how serious they are.
