Despite members of Ghana’s ruling party-NDC calling on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and grant “Montie Fm’s 3 musketeers” amnesty using his presidential pardon powers, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West Constituency-Ursula Owusu has said the three should take up and serve their punishment as men without an interference.
Interestingly, the National Democratic Congress released a statement on the day the three were convicted, signed by the party’s National Chairman-Dr. Kofi Portuphy, condemning their jailing.
After that, some angry NDC members besieged the party headquarters in Accra, to put pressure on leaders to call on President John Mahama to use his powers to grant the three pardon—and others have threatened not to vote if this is not done.
However, according to Ursula Owusu, since the three know what they did was wrong and the essence of the sentence is to punish them for the wrong done and also to reform them, they should be allowed to serve their 4 months sentence.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show on Joy Fm, Mrs. Ursula Owusu stated that “condoning the act encourages more of such dangerous phenomenon.”
She said: “And it wasn’t just a one-off, that was the consistent pattern of behaviour of this station, and they had done it to almost everybody they didn’t agree with in this country.”
The Supreme Court of Ghana on July 27, 2016 sentenced two Montie Fm’s panellists-Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn plus the morning show host, Salifu Maase to four months’ imprisonment for contempt of court—following threats by these three to kill justices of the court.
