Women have for long been oppressed and marginalised by all the world’s religions—especially the three Abrahamic religions.
In most Christian churches, the role of the woman is curbed and an artificial glass ceiling has been well enforced.
The catholic church for instances does not allow women to join the clergy. This is not as a result of anything more than the historical position women occupied in the church.
It’s plainly wrong that a woman cannot join the clergy not because she is incompetent or anything—but simply because she is a woman.
Pope Francis who is described as the most progressive Pope the catholic church has ever had is looking into the contribution and position of women in the church—which would explore women joining the clergy.
MailOnline reports that: “Pope Francis has appointed a special commission to examine the role of female deacons in the Church, in a potentially historic opening on the possibility of women joining the clergy.”
A statement from Vatican said on Tuesday that he 13-member commission, made up of seven men and six women, will study the question of female deacons with a particular focus on the history of women having played this role in the early years of the Church.
The set up is a fulfillment of a pledge Pope Francis made in May during a question-and-answer session with members of female religious orders.
While other religious groups such as Buddhist and the Methodist faith comfortably ordain women, Jewish Orthodox, Muslim, Mormon and the Roman Catholic Church firmly object to women becoming such leaders.
