US Women’s national team goalkeeper Hope Solo has been handed a six month suspension on the back of comments she made after the US team were eliminated from the Olympic Games at the quarter final stage by Sweden.
Sweden battled the US to a 1-1 draw after extra time, before prevailing 4-3 on penalites – but an infuriated Solo speaking after the game, described the Swedes as ‘cowards’ for defending throughout the tie.
“I thought we played a courageous game…but I also think we played a bunch of cowards” an animated Solo told the press after the game.

Solo’s comments after USA-Sweden

US Soccer announced the 35 year old’s six month ban, describing her comments as ‘unacceptable’. Sweden is coached by former US national team coach Pia Sundhage.
In a post on Facebook reacting to the decision, Solo said she was ‘saddened’ by it.
“I am saddened by the Federation’s decision to terminate my contract.” she said. “I could not be the player I am without being the person I am, even when I haven’t made the best choices or said the right things.”
This was only the US’ second elimination from women’s football at the Olympics, having won all but one of the tournaments held since women’s football was introduced at the games prior to their loss to Sweden.
