The Montie 3 have been freed from their bondage, walking out of the Akuse cells Friday morning following their receipt of a Presidential pardon.
The three – Godwin Ako Gunn, Salifu Maase and Alistair Nelson – were jailed following a radio program hosted by Maase on Montie Fm in which they threatened the lives of Supreme Court justices.
A petition for their release was then handed to the President, who approved it based on the advice of the Council of State.
Speaking to the media after their release, the three reiterated their apologies to the Supreme Court justices for their threats, and promised to be more circumspect in their utterances going forward.
“Let us restate our sincerest apologies to Her Ladyship the Chief Justice, Justices of the Supreme Court, and the Bench in general for the unfortunate and regrettable conduct which was rightly condemned by all Ghanaians. The past month has been a difficult one for us and none of us will ever wish to find himself anywhere near that situation again. Never again!
“That being said, we have learned our lesson and we’ll like to reiterate President Mahama’s call to our fellow media practitioners and all who appear on our platforms to take a cue from what happened to us and be circumspect in our utterances.”
The trio also thanked the President and the Council of State for their role in their release. Saying they would like to thank the President for “exercising his constitutional powers under Article 72 of the Constitution in our favour in remitting the remainder of the custodial sentence imposed on us recently.
“We would also like to thank the Council of State profusely for their role in our release.”
