Human beings are petty and dishonest and often times cowardly, but the way we’ve managed to manipulate the world around us through technology is nothing short of remarkable.
We have managed to make the most unnatural things natural, with one big example being flying.
An aircraft carrier is a marvel of military application of technology, an island city from which countries can launch mass destruction. And of its most surreal moments is when an airplane has to land on it.
Usually when coming in for a landing, a piece of wire, known as the tailhook, snags the aircraft and stretches as it rolls, helping slow its momentum for the landing.
But when a US Navy aircraft attempted a similar landing, the wire snapped instead of stretching. The airplane thus overshot the runway on the carrier and headed for the waiting water.
