The qualification series for Afcon 2017 was completed over the weekend, with Ghana rounding out ours with a lethargic 1-1 draw against Rwanda, having already booked our place on the last matchday.
The entire 16 team roster for the competition has now been rounded out, and alongside host Gabon, we now know who would potentially be in the Black Star’s way as they attempt to win their first Afcon trophy since 1982!
Talk about a drought.
Upfront, some giants like Nigeria and South Africa have already missed out, with 2012 winners Zambia also knocked out of qualifying. Six time champions Egypt makes a return after missing the last three tournaments, as well as four times winners Cameroon, who missed out on the last one in South Africa.
Ghana finished as runners up in 2010 and 2015, and reached at least the semi finals for the past five tournaments (since 2008) – but have failed to add to the four tournament wins since 1982. Let’s hope next year is our year.
Here are the sixteen qualified teams for Gabon 2017, to be held from 14 January- 5 February.
Algeria
Burkina Faso
Cameroon
Cote d’Ivoire
DR Congo
Egypt
Gabon (Hosts)
GHANA
Guinea Bissau
Mali
Morocco
Senegal
Togo
Tunisia
Uganda
Zimbabwe
