David Cameron Steps Down As Tory MP For Witney – By-Election To Be Held

David Cameron
Former British PM David Cameron has vacated his seat as Conservative MP for the Oxfordshire seat of Witney.
Cameron, who recently was forced to resign as PM in the aftermath of Brexit, has announced that he would leave the legislature, as he did not want to distract from the work of the new PM, former Home Secretary Theresa May.
He said as a former Prime Minister, any disagreement he has with the government would be blown out of proportion and make life difficult for May.
“Obviously I’m going to have my own views about different issues,” he said.
“People would know that and that’s really the point. As a former prime minister it is very difficult, I think, to sit as a backbencher and not be an enormous diversion and distraction from what the government is doing.”
Cameron has held the seat since 2001, and thanked his constituents for the honour before stepping down.
A by-election would be held to elect his successor.
