The Ministry of Youth and Sports is currently in negotiations with the Management Committee of the Ghana Black Stars to reach a new consensus on a winning bonus to be paid the Stars which the Sports Minister says should be ‘affordable’ and ‘well deserved’.
The Black Stars are known to be paid $10,000 per game, a figure described as too high and which has brought much controversy in the past.
Since assuming office, Nii Lante Vanderpure has been squabbling with the Ghana Fa over issues of money – even refusing to release money to fly in players for the Stars last AFCON qualification game – and with the commencement of world cup qualifying fast approaching, a solution is hastily needed over payment for the team.
Speaking to Happy Fm in Accra, Nii Lante said the Sports Ministry is trying to reach a consensus with management of the team for a new bonus that would be affordable to government and acceptable to the players.
‘We have not yet reached a consensus, but there are negotiations ongoing between the MoYS and Management Committee of the Black Stars, but I can assure all Ghanaians that we will pay a bonus that is well deserved and affordable,” the Odododiodio MP said.
”So far, the players have not complained about what they are receiving, so it’s my assumption that at least, it will serve as a yardstick to decide on what to pay and, we shall do everything in the interest of Ghana and pay bonuses which can be sustainable going into the future.” he added.
The team is next in action Friday, when they take on the Cranes of Uganda in a world cup qualifier in Tamale.
