A social media survey carried out by local group Penplusbytes monitoring the social media patterns of the top politicians and parties in the country has showed that President Mahama continues to be the most active of all the top flagbearers in the country.
The Governance and Social Media Index (GSMI) was launched to track the relevance and effectiveness of social media use in the political arena. From the last report released in June till this one, tracking till the end of September, the President has retained his edge over Nana Akuffo-Addo.
However, in terms of who has generated more new support within the past three months, Nana Akuffo-Addo leads the President. The NPP flagbearer gained 265, 341 new followers on Facebook in the interim, over 100k more followers than the President’s 125,171 new followers.
In terms of party followers online, the NPP leads the way with 307,963 likes on Facebook, followed by the PPP with 33,193 before the NDC, surprisingly, with only 24,743 followers.
Twitter is largely underutilised by the parties, with only Mahama and Akuffo-Addo holding any kind of large following. Politicians like NDP flagbearer Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings and Ivor Greenstreet have pitiful followings of 493 and 609 followers respectively.
