A Nigerian man caught red handed lifting some food received the unusual punishment of being forced to eat whatever it was that he had stolen.

The man, a 35 year old father of two, was seen sneaking out of a restaurant in Igbogene, Bayelsa State around 2am one morning when a local vigilante group picked him up.

He was in possession of twelve wraps of fufu, half a basin of gari and a pot of soup.

“We were on patrol around 2:00am when we got to the Timida School area, we saw a man at a local food joint eating, we questioned the culprit and he confessed to have stolen’ a pot of soup, some wraps of fufu and half basin of garri. He claimed it was the economic hardship that led him to the heinous act.” a member of the group which caught the man told Nigeria’s Guardian newspaper.

He was sent before a chief in the area, where he confessed that hunger and economic hardships had influenced his decision. His punishment was to be paraded around town with the stolen items, after which he was forced to eat them.
