President Mahama Indulges In Tribal Politics Up North – I Pity Northerners Calling For Change

The President, John Dramani Mahama, must be really desperate to hold on to power, because his utterances continue to get more bizarre as elections draw closer.
Within the past few days, he has flown all over the place, sometimes claiming that the hardships we have faced these four years have been foundation laying for the coming prosperity, other times claiming those suffering these hardships are lazy people sitting in their rooms and not taking advantage of the opportunities he has provided.
Tribalism is one of the many sins Ghanaians routinely indulge in and with elections coming up, it is a powerful binding tool to play identity politics with – and the President is not hesitating to take that advantage. Speaking at Lawra in the Upper West Region, the President called on Northerners to abandon the NPP in droves.
According to him, the party does not care about them one bit, and expressed pity at Northerners supporting the NPP, claiming the party is using them and would dump them immediately they get into power.
“Sometimes I feel sad when I see some of our Northern brothers running around and also doing this (the change sign), they will use you and dump you,” he said.
In another portion of his speech, playing more identity politics, he said the NPP would never let Nana Addo’s running mate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the party, as they once did to Alhaji Aliu Mahama.
