A South African prophet, Lethebo Rabalago, known by his followers as ‘Detective’, is currently being investigated for spraying insecticides into the faces of his congregants, claiming it is a tool for healing.
The government of South Africa have reportedly set up a commission to investigate the motives behind the prophet’s actions, the BBC reports.
The South African Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities have also condemned his actions in a statement., calling on people “whose rights and beliefs have been violated to report such to the Commission,”
Lethebo has risen to public prominence, like many other preachers before him, because he is using extreme methods in his ministry. The preacher sprays a very popular insecticide brand in South Africa known as ‘Doom’ (kind of like Raid or Sasso in Ghana) onto the faces of his church members, claiming it can heal illnesses from cancer to HIV to ulcers.
“The truth is, Doom can heal people in the right way.” Lethebo told the website ENCA in an interview.

He claims he prays over it and uses it like other preachers use oil or holy water. He sprays it full on onto the faces of his congregants.
“[We] want to make very clear that it is unsafe to spray Doom or any aerosol onto people’s faces,” Tiger Brands, the company behind the production of Doom, have been forced to come out to dissociate themselves from the practice.
“Doom has been formulated to kill specific insects which are detailed on the cans, and the packaging has very clear warnings which must be adhered to,” they said in a statement.
Despite all that, his church members are unfazed, they turn up happily every week to be sprayed in the face.

Lethebo is simply following in the proud South African tradition of preachers exploiting their dumb followers willing to do anything in the name of God – from swallowing snakes to chewing grass, drinking petrol. etc etc.
