The immortal Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe, has hinted at retirement, possibly for the first time in his Presidency.
Speaking to supporters in the capital Harare over the weekend, Mugabe is reported to have struck a more malleable tone about his eventual stepping down than he ever has in the past.
According to the state owned Sunday Mail, as reported by ENCA, Mugabe told war collaboraters he would be looking at retirement soon, having finished his eternal battle against the West.
“Mugabe told the ‘war collaborators’ that he believed he had now ‘defeated… the British and Americans…’ and that he understood times were difficult in Zimbabwe.” the ENCA report said.
“We are in a critical time… for regime change.” he reportedly added.
Mugabe has been at the helm of the Southern African nation for over three decades, ever since he helped the nation gain independence from the British. Mugabe, despite being 92, has refused to step down from leading his nation numerous times, winning contested election after contested election. This announcement only comes as a surprise because he has never seriously hinted at retirement before.
Despite his words, his party, ZANU-PF, have indicated Mugabe would stand for office in 2018.
