Teshieboi is uniquely suited to take that role, his lyrical dexterity and versatility on the mic a winning combination. At 25, he’s got all the time on his side to win the country over.
His greatest asset is his ability to use the skill of joining words, phrases and sentences to make poignant meaning and put across his message on the issues that matter most to him and his legion of followers. The uniqueness of his art as a rapper is seen from his choice of languages; that is using his home language (Ga) – but punctuated with the use of English to express himself and broaden his appeal to reach a larger audience.
Teshieboi’s effectiveness as a rapper stems from his tough upbringing in the slum side of Teshie (Maami). There is little doubt how our challenges shape us and for the strong ones among us, serve as inspiration to aspire for greater heights. The tough conditions he experienced as a child and the hustle of fending for himself in his teens exposed him to various situations in life, impressing on him the need to serve as an agent of change through his music.
Like most Ghanaian rappers, Teshieboi’s art really started to blossom at the Senior High School Level, even if his love for music has been with him from childhood. St Thomas Aquinas Senior High School provided the nurturing ground for his burgeoning talent – just as MEDASS had served for Sarkodie and Aquinas’ eternal rivals, Labone Senior High, had served for Tic Tac – and countless other Senior High Schools had led to the development of future legends.
As a young man hell bent on success, Teshieboi is fortunate enough to find himself in an environment filled with people who share his dream to be a star, to get to the top of entertainment industry pyramid – and his affinity for the genres of hip-hop and afro pop are the tools to lead him to his destination.
Teshieboi is currently gradually rising through the ranks, building his way up to the top of the pile. He can boast of a cult following who follow his every move and are enamoured with his art, with songs such as ‘We Dey’, ‘Tsotsoo’ and ‘Jorley’ instant favourites.
For Teshieboi, inspiration for his craft comes from his admiration for artistes such as Tupac, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, EL and Jayso – and it is the versatile mix of creativity and flexibility provided by these artistes that gives him his unique approach to music.
Below is a sample of some of Teshieboi’s best offerings, showing off his lyrical dexterity across genres.
