Mumbai Daycare Staffer Arrested For Beating 10-Month-Old

mmb_1480065179_618x347A 30-year-old employee of a daycare centre in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, was arrested Thursday for allegedly hitting a 10-month-old baby girl at the creche. Her employer was arrested too.
The Indian Express reports below…
Police said accused Afsana Shaikh was captured on camera ruthlessly beating the child. Afsana and her employer Priyanka Nikam (34) were booked on charges of voluntarily causing hurt, common intention and sections of the Juvenile Justice Act.
A local court sent them to judicial custody. According to Dilip Kale, senior inspector at the Kharghar police station where the FIR was registered, 10-month-old Ritisha had been dropped at the Purva daycare centre at Sector 10 in Kharghar by her mother Ruchita Sinha Monday morning.
When Sinha picked up her daughter from the centre after she returned from work in the evening, she found some swelling around Ritisha’s eye. She asked Afsana about it but the latter dismissed her doubts, Kale said.
Seeing the bruises and the change in the toddler’s behaviour over the last two days, Ruchita suspected that something wrong had happened at the daycare centre.
She finally approached the Kharghar police Wednesday to register a complaint. The police directed that a medical test be conducted, which confirmed the injuries.
The Kharghar police then registered an FIR against Afsana and Nikam.
“We arrested the two women in the morning. They were produced before the local court, which sent them to jail custody,” Kale said.
While Afsana denied all along having hurt the child, he said, the police managed to get CCTV footage from the six cameras installed at the centre by Thursday afternoon.
“There were shocking images of the kid being beaten up and thrown around by Afsana. During her interrogation earlier, she had maintained that she had not beaten up the kid.
By the time we got the CCTV footage, we no longer had her custody,” Kale added.
