A plane carrying the players of the Brazilian football team Chapecoense has crashed in Colombia, with reports indicating just about six people survived the crash.
The plane, carrying 72 passenger – including the players – and nine crew members, was flying from Bolivia to the Medellin International Airport when it crashed in the mountanious areas near the Colombian town of La Union.
Chapecoense were on their way to Colombia to play Atletico Nacional in the first leg of the final of the South American club tournament Copa Sudamericana, with the second leg slated for Brazil next week. The game has now been suspended.
“…the plane crashed at about 10.15pm on Monday night after suffering power failures while flying through the mountainous Antioquia Department.” MailOnline reports.
“It’s a tragedy of huge proportions” Medellin’s Mayor Federico Gutierrez said.
Emergency services are reportedly at the crash site to deal with the survivors of the crash.
