Algerian Riyadh Mahrez Beats Andre Ayew And Three Others To BBC African Footballer Of The Year Award

Leicester City’s mazy Algerian winger, Riyadh Mahrez, has picked up the award for the BBC African Footballer of the Year for 2016.
Mahrez beat out competition from the reigning champion, Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, as well as Ghana and West Ham United forward Andre Ayew ‘Dede’.
Mahrez was one of three extraordinary talents – the other two being Jamie Vardy and N’Golo Kante – who led Leicester City to an improbable English Premier League Championship run. The mazy winger formed a deadly partnership with Vardy which got the goals to lead Leicester to an historic title.
“It means a lot, it’s something big for African players so I am very happy, I am very proud.” Mahrez told the BBC after his win.
“It’s always good to receive awards and for African players it’s a huge honour. To all the fans, thank you very much. I just have to carry on and keep going with my football and see what I can do.”
Other finalists included Yaya Toure and Liverpool’s Senegalese winger Sadio Mane.
