The government of Tanzania have announced a staggering 1,423 industries were created within the 12 month period between October 2015-2016.
Principal Trade Officer in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment of the Eastern African nation, Mr Wilfred Kahwa, made the revelation during a workshop addressing business in the country.
“The government is very much committed to ensure that the country attains its goal of becoming an industrialised one as planned is met,” Mr Kahwa said, adding that the new industries, mainly in manufacturing and processing – add about 15% to the country’s GDP.
Tanzania’s new President, John Magufuli, is lauded for his tough approach to governance, which includes slashing waste and growing industry. He famously once cancelled Independence day celebrations in the country, replacing it with a national day of clean up which he personally led.
Ghana’s incoming President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, has promised a similar initiative, promising to build one factory in every district. At least we now know it’s attainable, and we await what he can do once he gets into office.
