Nigeria’s health ministry has said that preliminary testing of the bags of rice seized from a warehouse has shown no evidence that the rice is ‘plastic’ as was intially widely reported.
Health Minister Isaac Adewole said on twitter that preliminary testing of the rice shows no trace of plastic, although there still remains concerns over the exact quality of the rice.
Officials of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) of the Nigeria Customs Service, (NCS) carried out the seizure of 102 bags of plastic rice from some businessmen who wanted to make a quick buck this festive season.
The rice did not have any sort of marker, such as expiry or manufacturing date, or a registration number from Nigeria’s version of a standards board (NAFDAC).
But the minister has sought to calm public fears after the first testing, tweeting that the testing has shown no evidence of plastic, adding that more detailed testing is due next week.
