A Nigerian football player, Uzoma Douglas, was shot dead in Benin City Thursday, the victim of a group of armed men.
Douglas, 18, was a defender for Gombe United, and died after being able to recover from his wounds – declared dead on his arrival at the hospital.
According to Sahara Reporters, his death is being attributed to a group of ‘cultists.’ Douglas was on break in the city and was out partying with friends when the shooting occurred.
Douglas played for Gombe last season in the Nigerian second tier, and was instrumental in helping them win promotion to the Nigerian Premier League. He was also a key member of the 2015 Nigerian U-17 world cup winning squad.
