Yahya Jammeh Refuses To Leave Office As Inauguration Day Dawns – ECOWAS Troops On Standby To Invade

blank

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has ignored an international deadline to leave office by midnight today for President-elect Adama Barrow to be installed, leading to an imminent military action against his country.

Jammeh has refused to step down despite losing elections held last year, and has instead consolidated his power, declaring a state of emergency and having Parliament extend his term by 90 days.

A sub regional military force formed by ECOWAS including soldiers from neighbouring Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria and others were supposed to take Barrow into Gambia for his inauguration later today, but are holding off as the regional body seeks UN approval.

“The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet on Thursday to adopt a statement on Gambia that will reaffirm the demand for Jammeh to hand over power” Al-Jazeera reported.

Tens of thousands of Gambians have fled for neighbouring Senegal as they fear military action would be necessary before Jammeh would leave power.

We’ll update you as this hugely important day goes by.
