Troops from Senegal have entered The Gambia following the inauguration of President Adama Barrow, threatening to oust Yahya Jammeh by force if he does not leave office by noon today.

More troops deployed by ECOWAS, including some from Ghana, are still stationed in Senegal but remain ready to venture in at the appropriate time to usher Barrow into office.

That appropriate time has been set at noon today, with last round of talks set to be held between Jammeh and Guinea’s President Alpha Conde to attempt a final peaceful solution.

Barrow was sworn in at the Gambian embassy in Senegal as Jammeh has refused to relinquish power, and ECOWAS have made it clear they are prepared to oust Jammeh militarily if it comes to it. The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Thursday giving its backing to Barrow but cautioning that a peaceful solution should be prioritised.

Aside Senegales troops already in the Gambia, Nigerian aircraft have also penetrated its airspace and are ready to strike if the time comes. Jammeh’s options continue to shrink.
