17 Dead, Many More Injured In Stadium Stampede In Angola

A stadium stampede in the Angolan city of Uige has led to the deaths of at least 17 people, with hundreds injured.

Supporters massed up at the gate trying to gate entry led to the stampede.

The first division sides Santa Rita de Cassia and Recreativo do Libolo were about to play the game when the tragedy occurred.

A fan who survived with a broken hand told Reuters that the gate to the stadium was already overcrowded when some fans rushed the gate.

“When they gave the opportunity for everyone to come in, we were all packed at the gate,” the fan, identified as Mr Vika, told the news agency.

“Some people had to walk on top of other people. There were 76 casualties, of whom 17 died,” Ernesto Luis, director general of the local hospital said.

Angola’s President has ordered an investigation into the incident, as the casualty count continues to grow.
