Each year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.”
The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia according to history.
The 14th of February has been accepted globally as Valentine’s day and the celebration of love and affection. Couples all over the world celebrate the love they have for one other on this day.
Typical of us as a people (Ghanaians) we have blindly accepted this day and made it our own with the mentality it’s a must to buy gifts for that guy or lady you’re in a relationship with. This has become so widely accepted it is nearly impossible to be in a relationship and not want to celebrate Valentine’s day.
Prepare to get a breakup message the very moment you announce Valentine is not worth celebrating.
You would understand the true meaning of boredom if you’ve ever been single on this day. Which brings me to why I am writing this article, the thought that there is a sudden change in character of most ladies when Valentine day is approaching.
According to Ghanaian social media circles, ladies all of a sudden start emulating mother Theresa and are more humble than former president Mahama in his comfortable lead. This makes one want to believe some ladies are in relationships for that sole purpose of having someone to celebrate Valentine’s day with.

Well, I wouldn’t put that thought pass our current crop of Ghanaian ladies, they are capable of doing worse in a bid to satisfy their hunger for material things. Valentine Day has evolved from sending just flowers and lovely notes to loved ones to buying expensive gifts.
Woe unto any son of Adam who decides to go the traditional flower and love note way. The single ladies are not even left out of the pre Valentine politeness charade. After all you never know who might approach you with a love proposal before this day then you wouldn’t be left out of the Valentine craze.
Most guys seem to think ladies live for this special day and are desperate for gifts as testimony to the love they have for them.
This is not always the case but how can I blame the guys when the few thirsty material girls out there have dragged our pride in the mud and given us a bad name. Valentine is cool, I mean really cool if you get a gift too but it is not everything and our love for you don’t revolve around it.
I personally do not understand why you need a special day to show your love to someone you claim to love when you can do that every minute of every day. Love is not designated to be celebrated on a special day and we definitely won’t kill you or act angelic in a bid to lure you to buy us gifts. What most of you fail to realize is some of us, especially me and my circle of friends do not CARE about Valentine’s day.
We would celebrate our love regardless, so why put up a fake behavior to get you to buy some useless gift that would be a burden on your pockets and is not from your heart?
What these “thirsty” ladies fail to learn is you cannot be treating your guys like they owe you for being in a relationship with them all year and start acting like an incumbent president seeking reelection when Valentine day is approaching.
Fellow ladies, you wouldn’t have to display a fake side if you had a job and can afford to buy yourself a decent gift on Valentine day.
After all self love is the greatest of them all. This stupid notion about Vals day has to stop NOW.
