Mahama To Contest NDC 2020 Election Primaries Despite Family Objections – REPORT

Former President John Dramani Mahama is poised to contest for leadership of the NDC for the 2020 elections despite his stunning loss last year.

According to the NDC affiliated Al-Hajj newspaper, the former President is set to ignore all advise from his family members to jump back into the political fray.

“The old man (Mr Mahama) is likely to contest the 2020 election…he has been discussing with close friends his plans of contesting the NDC’s flag bearer election to enable him lead the party once again into the next election,” a source close to the Mahama family reportedly told the newspaper.

He added that whilst the former President had earlier on yielded to his family’s advice, “he was compelled to change his mind because he thinks it will be a great disservice to Ghanaians if he does not stage a comeback giving how the Akufo-Addo government is messing up what he has labored to build for this country.”

Mahama was humiliated by Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2016 elections which the NDC thought was a sure banker but ended up losing by over 1m votes whilst also losing their massive Parliamentary majority as well.

The family of the one term President have been bearing on him not to reenter the political fray, although some NDC elements seem intent on getting him back.

Is it plausible that Mahama would do better than his abysmal 44.4% if he tried again? Who knows in politics?
