Though it’s not clear what the President of Ghana-Nana Akufo Addo means by “indecent social media content”, he has assured Ghanaians that his government will soon regulate indecent social media content.

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Thursday paid a courtesy call on Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II, the Paramount Chief of Dormaa Traditional Area on the final day of a two-day working visit to the Brong- Ahafo Region. And it was during his meeting with Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II that he said his government would institute regulations to guide and control indecent social media content.

“He said regulating indecent communication was essential and could help control content posted on social media, which would also avoid denigrating Ghanaian societal norms and values”, reports Ghana News Agency

Akufo Addo added that regulating social media content would instil some level of sanity and decency in the way information was disseminated in the advent of social media and technology.

We hope the President is not talking about any form of arbitrary censorship of social media content–considering the fact that social media has become the strongest tool of information dissemination in Ghana and also a tool that gives ordinary citizens a powerful voice.
