35 Year Old Arrested For Defrauding Ghanaians By Circulating Job Offers On WhatsApp

We’ve all seen similar messages floating around on Whatsapp, advertising a certain job and asking you to call or message a certain number to apply.
It always looks suspicious that any company would advertise vacancies via whatsapp, but in the desperation for a job many fall prey to these.
A 35 year old guy has been arrested after he scammed prospective applicants to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The GRA recently advertised new job openings in the Daily Graphic, which Nick Kafui, the suspect, took advantage of. He circulated whatsapp messages claiming anyone interested in the job should contact him, upon which he would request for money.
After hearing of the scam, officials from the Customs Division used a ‘victim’ to contact him. He asked for Ghc 6,000 to get the applicant a job.
“We, through the victim, contacted Kafui and he charged Ghc 6,000 for a candidate interested in joining the Customs Division of the GRA. We then sent the victim to give him an initial cheque for Ghc 4,000, and in the course of the transaction we arrested and handed him over to the police,” Commissioner of the Customs Division, Mr Isaac Crentsil, told the media Monday.
Crenstil warned Ghanaians that any work advertisement by the company has no money involved in the process.
“With respect to recruitment into the Customs Division or for that matter the GRA, we do not charge any amount. Please apply through the advert placed in the Daily Graphic and make yourself ready for all the necessary processes, so that you can get the chance to join us. We are not collecting any money or selling any forms,” he said.
