ICGC Should Pay Royalties On Events Like 'Greater Works' – GHAMRO

The Ghana Music Rights Organization recently revealed they are contemplating charging churches for royalties.
The rationale for this policy change, which the Organization announced, was because churches were increasingly organizing events that were more commercial than spiritual.
Recently, the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) organized the Greater Works Conference in Accra, an event which drew massive headlines over the extortionate amount of money being charged for ‘miracles’.
Alhaji Asuma Banda, vice President of GHAMRO, says the Greater Works Conference is a great example of church programs which resemble events and for which royalties must be paid on.
“Pastor Mensah Otabil’s Greater Works Conference that was recently held is clearly an event and not a church program; we have decided not to take any action now because we want to take this opportunity to educate them. Most of them don’t know and we thank God some of the pastors are now beginning to understand our point.” Bandex said.
“For instance, Cwesi Oteng can never charge ICGC for his performance because it is the church which made him (Cwesi Oteng). They may decide to give him transportation fee but that doesn’t mean they have paid for his services and at the end of the day, he can get back this money from GHAMRO through the royalties the church pays,” he added.
