Head coach of the senior national team, Kwesi Appiah, says he still holds out hope he can lead his team to the 2018 Fifa World Cup set to be held in Russia.
A 1-1 draw with Congo on Friday dealt a near fatal blow to the Stars qualification chances as they fell four and five points respectively behind group forerunners Egypt and Uganda with only three games to go.
Appiah has been immensely criticized since the game, with many writing off the chances of Ghana qualifying altogether.
However, speaking after the game, the former Stars defender refused to throw in the towel.
“It’s very disappointing to drop points at this crucial stage of the qualifiers but in football you can never say never. The most important thing is to try and do the best you can.” he said.
The Black Stars are back in action Tuesday in Congo, before travelling to Kampala and hosting Egypt in the last group game. Despite the challenging schedule, Appiah still remains optimistic.
Ghana has qualified for every single World Cup since Germany 2006, but are now all but guaranteed to miss out on Russia. If it happens, Appiah would once again make history by becoming the first coach to fail to carry Ghana to the mundial since we first qualified – mirroring his ignominious failure when he became the first coach to get Ghana kicked out at the Group stage of the Fifa World Cup at Brazil 2014.
