The current NPP government are currently not doing too bad since coming into office. Whilst they’ve reneged on some promises, they’re also working hard to fulfil others, even if at this early date it’s difficult to tell how everything would turn out.
But it’s difficult to be optimistic about a country if we’re solving big issues like secondary education and digital addressing without tackling the basic ones, like ensuring every child of school going age can attend school without going through hell.
It’s not like the latter is not important, but getting the basics wrong is a cardinal sin.
According to an adomonline report, students at the Tapa Amanya Roman Catholic Primary School in the Volta Region school in a bamboo structure and lack furniture to the extent that most of the children sit on cement blocks to learn.
The entire school has very few desks, no blackboards, chalk or textbooks, and sometimes money for these supplies come right out of the headmaster’s own pocket.
Oh, and the school also has snakes!
Speaking to adomonline, one of the students appealed for government support so they can have the best education. According to this Class 5 pupil, the severity of the school’s lack of facilities has forced them and class 6 pupils to be put in the same class.
“We don’t have teachers. We want the government to give us teachers so that those in primary six can go to their class. Some are sitting in threes. We are merged together. We are joined by the class 5 and 6. We learn class six subjects and it’s difficult to understand…” the student told the reporter.
School headmaster Emmanuel Owusu echoed similar sentiments: “We use bamboo for the fence. Last time it fell on one of the kids. We have not had any help. We called on the government. Some of them made promises but we have been looking forward and it doesn’t seem to come true…”
Check out some photos from this very sad situation below. Over to you, Mr President/MP of the area. This should not be happening in this day and age.
