UK based Ghanaian musician-Fuse ODG recently launched a campaign against the cosmetic brand, Nivea, claiming the company has mounted several billboards in Ghana and other African countries which promotes skin bleaching.
He has been joined by several Ghanaian Celebrities and social media folks.
Nivea’s billboards which have come under attack features former Miss Nigeria Omowunmi Akinnifesi, a dark woman promoting Nivea fair product–which has led these people to think that, it’s a subtle way of promoting skin bleaching.
The billboard carries the message: ‘For Visibly Fairer Skin’
But Diamond Appiah, who has been accused of bleaching in the past disagrees with the idea that these billboards by Nivea are inappropriate and somewhat promotes skin bleaching.

In a Facebook post, she wrote:
With all due respect is sad how some Ghanaians so are ignorant about Cosmetics n think every product for fair skin is a bleaching product. Nivea is a Brand that has products for Men and Women and all skin types so the ongoing social media campaign to pull down this billboard doesn’t make sense.
We have fair skin and dark skin Ghanaians. So if the brand has launched a products to cater for fair skin without ingredients that can bleached the Skin , how does the products become a Bleaching cream. The funny aspect is that all those supporting this campaign are the Dark Skin Ghanaians who want to enforce their skin choice on everybody forgetting some Ghanaians were born naturally fair.
Using Dark or Light skin products is all about the individual’s choice because at the end of the day one’s skin tone doesn’t affect another person’s life or bank balance in anyway so the Dark Skin Ghanaians should give the Light Skin ones a break. We were all not born Dark n can’t use products for Dark Skin.
