Once upon a time highlife music was king in Ghana, in fact for a long time it was the only game in town and Ghana produced some of the best highlife singers ever.
As time went on more and more genres were either invented or imported, with hiplife and reggae/dancehall being the two most prominent ones.
As time goes on some fantasitc highlife artists have all come and gone but the genre continues to lag behind the others.
Bisa Kdei, a highlife star himself, has revealed that he believes the embrace of dancehall by Ghanaians is what is killing highlife.
According to the ‘Mansa’ hitmaker, instead of concentrating on and boosting what we have we are stealing genres from other countries.
“Highlife is struggling as far as Ghanaians continue to give much attention to foreign genres especially Dancehall.” Kdei said.
“We just have to believe in ourselves that Highlife is from us and push higher the indigenous music genre…it’s only Highlife that’s putting Ghana out there.
“The Europeans want to listen to indigenous music and instruments comparably to Dancehall among others if you’re a Ghanaian artiste. How can a Ghanaian artiste sell Dancehall music better than Jamaicans?” he wondered.
