Have You Heard This: Ghana Among World's 10 Worst Economies In The World According To Forbes Magazine

blankGhana has the world’s largest manmade lake and the 1-gigawatt Aksombo Hydroelectric Plant, built to supply electricity to Africa’s largest aluminum smelter. But the smelter has been idle since 2009, a casualty of low aluminum prices and persistent electricity shortages that have forced the government to divert the power elsewhere.
Ghana is a typical example of the world’s worst-managed economies: It’s a country that shouldn’t be poor, but it is. The West African nation’s gross domestic product per capita fell 9% last year to $621, ranking it 154th out of 184 countries tracked by the International Monetary Fund, below resource-impoverished Haiti. With a $3 billion trade deficit last year and $4.9 billion in external debt, Ghana is struggling to pay its bills even as it sits on some of the world’s biggest reserves of gold and bauxite, as well as considerable amounts of offshore oil, which is being developed by Anadarko Petroleum ( APC – news – people ) and others.
“Ghana’s problems are mostly homegrown,” said Peter Allum, the IMF’s mission chief to Ghana, in February. Forbes ranks Ghana ninth on our list of the world’s worst economies.
As the world focuses on Greece and the rest of the so-called PIIGs–Portugal, Italy and Ireland–in their fight to reverse years of irresponsible fiscal policies, another group of nations make them look positively well-managed. Forbes screened IMF data for countries that have low and declining per-capita GDP, high trade deficits and high inflation, all indicators of bad economic management regardless of the country’s inherent wealth.
All have at least one trait in common: Their governments discourage private investment–and economic growth–through policies of crony capitalism, expropriation or arbitrary enforcement of the laws. That makes it hard to generate hard currency to pay off government debt and discourages citizens from investing in education to improve their own economic lot.

John Paintsil…The Footballer Who Got Locked In His Own Hummer Because He Could Not Start It

blank
This is a good reward for trying to  unnecessary show off riches…This is really funny but then, what else did we expect?
Ghanaian footballer John Paintsil is reported to have gotten into ‘hot waters’ in Kumasi yesterday after his attempt to show off his riches back fired.
John Paintsil embarrassed himself when he was unable to start his own Hummer, leading to the car auto locking itself.
The report below filed by I.F. Joe Awuah Jnr. from  Kumasi explains what happened…
The player was in the car, registered JP 4-09, with his male friend in the passenger seat and two gorgeous ladies at the back. Paintsil tried starting the engine of the car, but he somewhat got some figures wrong, resulting in the complex car’s engine being jammed.
The embarrassing incident occurred right in front of Melcom Stores at Adum, the commercial nerve center of Kumasi at 1:00pm. Hundreds of people that were trading at the area left their products and rushed to the scene to catch a glimpse of the ‘disaster’ that had befallen the national star.
The huge crowd at the scene caused vehicular traffic which affected business in the city on the day. Paintsil was among the football stars and musicians that had stormed Kumasi the previous day to play a charity game at the Baba Yara stadium.
The soccer stars and musicians had visited the Melcom Stores at Adum as part of activities marking the charity game. Sources at the scene told DAILY GUIDE SPORTS that they saw a different person driving the car when the stars arrived.
According to them, when news got round town that the stars had visited the area, several people quickly besieged the place to see them.
An eye witness said perhaps the player wanted to show off, hence his decision to drive the car this time around. However, Paintsil, who was evidently uncomfortable behind the wheels, committed a blunder and got the car locked up.
